When applying for reimbursements, German Krankenkassen require special prosthetic treatment plans (the so-called Heil- und Kostenplan) prepared according to strictly defined standards. These requirements are unfamiliar to most dentists outside of Germany—which is hardly surprising, given that the German system utilizes over 70 symbols to denote dental status and planned therapy, along with more than 50 codes for requested procedures. German dentists undergo multi-day training courses on this topic, but expecting the same from international dental professionals is unrealistic.
